MANCHESTER – Manchester United players are in good spirits since their thumping win over Leeds United but must be cautious when they host a “quality” Wolverhampton Wanderers side on Tuesday, according to manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
United produced their best performance of the Premier League season when they thrashed Leeds 6-2 last week, with Scott McTominay and Bruno Fernandes scoring two goals each.
But Solskjaer said United, who have since defeated Everton in the League Cup and drawn at Leicester City in the league, must avoid being too open against Wolves.
“When the last game you played at Old Trafford gave you six goals, I’m sure the boys will look forward to it,” Solskjaer said. “It gave us confidence, that performance.
“We’ve had so many tight games against them (Wolves) and we are improving definitely, we were getting better and better at finding different solutions in different games.
“But we know that Wolverhampton they’ve got quality as well (and) that they’ll give us problems if we’re too open. So, we’ve got to put a plan together.”
Solskjaer hailed new recruit Edinson Cavani, who has bagged three goals and two assists in eight league games this season, saying he had no doubt the 33-year-old Uruguayan striker could handle the pressure of wearing the club’s iconic No. 7 jersey.
Cavani, who enjoyed seven prolific years with French champions Paris St Germain before joining United, sports the number worn by Old Trafford greats George Best, Eric Cantona, David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo.
“That was the first thing he asked me when I spoke to him if he could wear the number 7 and… when the chat I had with him and when I watched him before, I wasn’t in doubt that he could handle that number 7 shirt,” Solskjaer said.
“He is so meticulous, professional, his habits – everything about it shows why he’s had the career he’s had (and) at the age he’s now still one of the fittest players we’ve got.”
